Description

A pair of semi-detached estate workers' cottages, dating to circa 1860 and designed by E.G. Bruton for Christ Church College, Oxford. They are constructed of squared and coursed limestone, rock-faced, with slate roofs and stone chimneys. The cottages are in a rustic Gothick style, characterised by steep roof pitches and pointed arches over the narrow windows.

The cottages are two storeys and two bays wide facing the road. The right-hand bay is gabled and features a three-light window with stop-chamfered stone mullions on the ground floor, a pair of single-light windows above, and an arched vent slit in the gable. The right return of this bay has an arched doorway, a small round window below the eaves, and a two-light casement in a catslide semi-dormer. A gable beyond this is similar to the front but the ground floor window has been altered to a 20th-century metal casement. The front of the left-hand bay has two two-light windows with stop-chamfered stone mullions to the ground floor, and a single light in a gabled semi-dormer above. The left gable end is similar to the other gabled bays but has a round vent in the gable. A wing to the rear of the left-hand bay projects with a catslide porch, featuring an arched door and buttresses. The cottages are part of a row of three pairs of cottages and a lodgings house.
