Description
Water Terrace Gardens, located at East Terrace, were designed by Achille Duchene for the Ninth Duke of Marlborough between 1925 and 1930. The gardens feature limestone ashlar kerb walls with ball finials around pools and surrounding parterre beds, which create a square shape in the center of the terrace. At the corners of the pools are lead female statues, likely representing Venus, which rest on moulded ashlar pedestals adorned with fretted friezes. Small lead statues of putti and a cloaked woman are positioned on the kerb walls encircling the pools.
Stone urns are placed atop the wall to the West Terrace, accompanied by a lead putto to the south-west. The southern boundary consists of tall limestone ashlar walls, also topped with ball finials that line the steps. To the north, a low limestone ashlar wall supports additional stone urns and features steps leading to a raised walkway along the north side of the terrace. This raised walk includes a lead statue of a warrior holding a sword and shield, which stands on a moulded ashlar pedestal with a fretted frieze.
Ball finials flank the steps leading to the raised entrance to the terrace at the north-east, where a lead statue of a man untying sandals is situated on a similar pedestal, alongside a sarcophagus decorated with a frieze of classical figures. Blenheim Park, where these gardens are located, is recognized in the HBMC Register of Parks and Gardens at Grade I.
