Description
South Lodge, located approximately 1800 meters south-southeast of Eynsham Hall, is a lodge that has been converted into a house. It was built around 1843-1845, likely designed by Sir Charles Barry. The building is constructed from limestone ashlar and features raised chamfered quoins, with a gabled Welsh slate roof and 20th-century brick lateral stacks.
The lodge is designed in the Italianate style and is two stories tall with a two-window range. The left gable end has a pediment, bracketed eaves, chamfered quoin strips, and a storey band. It features a horned two-pane sash window in a moulded architrave above a similar sash window in a keyed and semi-circular arched architrave. To the right, there is a bay with similar eaves and quoin strips, which includes a porch with a moulded cornice and a 20th-century door flanked by similar sash windows in moulded architraves. There is an outshut to the left. The rear and right sides also have similar pedimented gable ends, with the right side featuring a canted bay window. The interior has not been inspected.
The lodge and its gates were built at the south entrance to Eynsham Hall during its remodelling by Barry for the 5th Earl of Macclesfield.
