Description

SP41SW EYNSHAM BARNARD GATE 4/125 South Lodge, approx. 1800m. SSE of Eynsham Hall

GV II

Lodge, now house. c.1843-5, probably by Sir Charles Barry. Limestone ashlar, with raised chamfered quoins; gabled Welsh slate roof; C20 brick lateral stacks. L-plan. Italianate style. 2 storeys; 2-window range. Pedimented gable end to left, with bracketed eaves, chamfered quoin strips and storey band, has horned 2-pane sash in moulded architrave above similar sash in keyed and semi-circular arched architrave. Bay to right, with similar eaves and quoin strips, has porch with moulded cornice and C20 door flanked by similar sashes in moulded architraves. Outshut to left. Similar pedimented gable ends to rear and right, the latter with canted bay window. Interior not inspected. The lodge and gates were built at the south entrance to Eynsham Hall (q.v.), when it was remodelled by Barry for the 5th Earl of Macclesfield. (Buildings of England: Oxfordshire, p.602).
