Description
Wayside Cottage and Upper Wayside Cottage are two houses located on Witney Road in South Leigh. Wayside Cottage dates from the 17th century and is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with gabled thatch roofs. It features a ridge stack made of stone finished in brick. The cottage has an extended three-unit plan, is one storey high with an attic, and has a three-window range. There are timber lintels above a 19th-century plank door and late 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars, except for a 20th-century light on the left. The cottage also has similar late 19th-century dormer casements.
Upper Wayside Cottage is from the late 18th century and is also made of coursed limestone rubble, topped with a gabled stone slate roof and featuring a brick end stack. This cottage has a one-unit plan, is two storeys high with an attic, and has a one-window range. It has timber lintels over a 20th-century door and windows, as well as a gabled dormer. The interiors of both cottages have not been inspected but are likely to be of interest.
