Description

Sister Superior's House at St Mary's School is a house built in the 17th century, which was remodeled and extended to the right in the early 18th century, and features a late 19th-century bay to the left. The exterior is roughcast over the original timber frame, with early 18th-century Flemish bond brick and flared headers above and to the right of the door. The roof is covered with old tiles and there are brick stacks. The building has a T-shaped plan, with two storeys and an attic to the left and two storeys to the right.

There are brackets supporting a pediment over a six-panelled door with a fanlight. Segmental header arches are present over an 18th-century four-light leaded casement and a 20th-century one-light casement to the right. To the left of the door, there are two 18th-century two- and three-light leaded casements above a late 19th-century three-light casement, along with similar late 19th-century casements. The late 19th-century bay to the left is three storeys high. The roof is gabled with a ridge stack.

At the rear, there is an early 18th-century two-storey wing made of Flemish bond brick with a tile-hung gable end, an old tile gabled roof, a brick lateral stack, 18th-century sashes, and a storey band. Inside, the room to the left features a chamfered and stopped beam, a panelled dado, and an early 18th-century quarter-turn open-string staircase to the rear left, which has three turned balusters on each tread, a wreathed handrail, and a panelled dado. The jamb of the rebuilt fireplace to the left includes a reset datestone marked "P.R.M. 1684". The first floor and attic have not been inspected but are likely to be of interest.
