Description

No. 1 Portway, which also includes No. 44 Newbury Street, is a house dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with remodelling in the 19th century. The building is stuccoed over its original timber framing and has an old tile roof. It features a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with a three-window range. The entrance has a late 19th-century six-panelled door with an overlight, while to the left there is a 20th-century door and shop front. To the right, there are late 19th-century ground- and first-floor bay windows, and a late 19th-century three-light casement window to the left. The roof is gabled. There is a similar two-window range to the left side. The side wall has carved brackets supporting a flat hood over a 19th-century six-panelled door (two glazed), and segmental arches above late 19th-century ground-floor sashes and 20th-century first-floor casements. The gabled roof has a gable end stack and adjoins a similar wing with a gable end stack to the rear right. There is also a similar 18th-century one-bay extension to the rear left. Inside, there are late 19th-century doors, except for three 18th-century two-panelled doors. The interior features chamfered beams throughout, with original joists visible in the front left room. The timber-framed walling and partitions are exposed in the left rooms. The roof structure includes a queen-post design with clasped purlins, and there are quarter-turn stairs in the late 18th-century rear left extension.
