Description
Numbers 1 to 8 Stiles Court are almshouses built in 1680 for Robert Stile. They are constructed of Flemish bond brick with flared headers and feature a 20th-century tile roof and brick stacks. The buildings are arranged in a courtyard plan and consist of one storey with an attic, forming a five-bay range. The central projecting bay has a semi-circular arch with a decorative keystone above a 20th-century door. A segmental pedimented datestone reads, "The Gift of/ Mr Robert Stile/ of Amsterdam/ Merchant who/ died October/ Y 3rd Anno Domini/ 1680." There are gauged brick flat arches over 2-light leaded casements with shutters. The structure has a chamfered plinth, a gauged brick moulded cornice, and 20th-century hipped dormers. The hipped roof features ridge stacks. The left side wall has a three-window range with gauged brick flat arches over 20th-century casements, while the rear wall has a similar five-window range with moulded wood architrave framing the central doorway. The interior has not been inspected.
