St Anne's House

St. Anne’s House is an early 18th century town house, now used as dormitory accommodation for St. Mary’s School since 1935. It was refronted and extended to the right around 1880. The house is constructed of yellow brick with red brick dressings and raised limestone ashlar quoins; the left side has early 18th century flared brick with red brick dressings and is partly visible at the rear. The roof is hidden, with brick stacks. Originally designed with a two-unit plan, it is now three storeys and five windows wide. The right-hand side features triple-keyed cambered arches over late 19th century sash windows with half-H aprons on the first and second floors. A stone plinth course, raised brick storey bands, and a moulded stone cornice to a panelled parapet are present. The roof is hipped with end stacks, and the front left stack has a stone astragal and cornice. The left side wall has a two-window range with gauged brick segmental arches and keystones over blind windows; two early 18th century sashes are found in similar surrounds to the rear. A late 19th century two-storey extension, in a similar style, is set to the right, with a chamfered elliptical arch over the entrance door. Internally, the house retains panelled doors and shutters. An early 18th century round-headed arch leads to a late 19th century panelled room with a fireplace on the left. The early 18th century winder stairs have fluted column-on-vase balusters, a fluted newel post, and panelled dado, with rusticated oak boarding to the casing. A keyed round-headed arch with moulded imposts and panelled reveals provides access to a panelled landing. A first-floor room on the left features bolection-moulded panelling with segmental-headed recesses flanked by fluted pilasters, framing the fireplace. The late 19th century block on the right has a plaster ceiling and stained glass windows in a ground-floor room.
