Description

Westmill Farmhouse is a 17th-century core with an addition dating to around 1820. It is situated on the Highworth Road in Watchfield. The farmhouse is constructed of rubble stone, rendered and incised to imitate stonework, with a gabled slate roof. It has a roughly L-shaped plan, comprising a 17th-century section running north-south and an 1820 addition to the west.

The north front, which faces the road, is two storeys high and five bays wide. The 17th-century section has two clapboarded gabled dormers and three-light sash windows. The 1820 addition features six six-pane sashes on the upper floor and six-pane sashes on the ground floor. A centrally positioned six-panel door is sheltered by a rendered porch with a gabled slate roof.

Inside, the drawing room in the 17th-century section retains two stopped and chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, a large chamfered stone jamb to an inglenook fireplace, and two-light mullioned windows with cavetto mouldings. These original windows are now set within an internal rear wall, due to later outshuts. The 1820 addition includes an elegant staircase with carved tread-ends, typical of the period.
