Description

The Stone House, now two dwellings, was built in the late 17th century, with a further wing added in the later 17th century. It is constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble, with more regular coursing on the left side, and has a gabled stone slate roof. Brick detailing is present on a ridge stack and the external stack at the right end. The building follows an L-shaped plan.

The two-storey front has a symmetrical appearance with a five-window range to the right. This section has a chamfered stone lintel over a blocked central doorway, and two-light, chamfered stone mullioned and transomed windows. A fire insurance plaque is visible. The roof dormers contain two-light leaded casements. The gabled front of the left wing features similar two- and three-light windows, as well as a round-headed attic window with Gothic glazing. The left side wall also has two-light windows. A three-storey stair turret at the rear incorporates a two-light and a three-light leaded casement. Later 19th and 20th century extensions are present at the rear.

The interior mainly dates to the 20th century, however, Number One on the right side of the building retains a 16th-century ovolo-moulded stone fireplace on the right and a chamfered stone fireplace to the left of the ridge stack, along with a blocked lobby-entry. A room to the left contains mid-18th century panelling and a china cupboard. A chamfered stone fireplace is found in a first-floor room to the right. The open-well staircase has plain balusters on a closed string and extends to the attic.

Historically, The Stone House was a coaching inn known as The Old George.
