Description

The Forge is an early to mid-18th century smithy and dwelling, later converted into a house and office. It is located on the north side of Faringdon Road, Kingston Bagpuize. The original structure is built of coursed limestone rubble, with brick infill in the right bay of the entrance. It has a gabled roof covered in old tile, with more recent tiles at the rear, and a brick internal stack. The building originally comprised a forge and a single-unit dwelling to the left.

The front elevation is one storey with an attic, and has a four-window range. A timber lintel sits above a 20th-century door located to the left of the centre, and there are 20th-century casement windows throughout. A gabled dormer window has a two-light leaded casement. The right bay features a timber lintel above double doors. A two-storey cross wing was added in the late 18th or early 19th century and remodelled in the late 19th century. A single-storey service extension to the rear includes a two-light leaded casement window.

Inside, there is an original brick fireplace and a vertical-diaphragm bellows to the right. To the left is an open fireplace with chamfered spine beams and run-out stops, above a bressumer.
