Description

Northcourt House and Tatham House are a former school, dated 1805, and situated on Northcourt Lane, Northcourt. The building is square in plan, with a later extension to the north-west. It was built by Henry Knapp (died 1825) and his wife, Anne, whose memorial is located in St Helen’s Church, Abingdon.

The main building is three storeys high, constructed of chequered brick with rubble cellars. It has a Welsh slate hipped roof concealed behind a small parapet above a stone moulded cornice with modillions. The east-facing entrance features a square stone porch with a quatrefoil balustrade and brick finials. A long segmental arch spans the first and second floors, with double-hung sash windows with glazing bars to the right of the arch and two blocked windows to the left on each storey. All windows are arched with red brick. To the south, the windows have blind boxes, except for those on the ground floor.

Inside, the building contains a contemporary staircase and fireplaces.
