Description

A row of three cottages, now a house and shop, located in Grove Street, Wantage, dating originally from the 17th century, with significant remodelling in the early 18th century. The cottages were initially timber-framed, but were later clad in early 18th-century Flemish bond brick, with quoins and dressings in orange brick. The roof is tiled with glazed bricks, and features glazed and red brick stacks. The cottages have a four-unit plan and two storeys with an attic, presenting a six-window front. Timber lintels are present above the 20th-century doors of numbers 23 and 25, and a concrete lintel above the door and windows of number 27. Segmental arches are above some of the 20th-century windows, with a mid-19th-century sash window on the right of number 27. A raking dormer with a 20th-century casement sits centrally, and a late 19th-century gabled dormer is to the left. The roof is gabled to the left and half-hipped to the right, with ridge stacks. A 20th-century two-light casement window is found in the gable wall on the right. The interior of number 29 (right) features an early 18th-century six-panelled door, stopped spine beams with run-out stops throughout, a collar-truss roof, and a jowled post with a mortise for an arch-brace to the rear.
