Description

  1. 752 THE SQUARE SU 4997 1/33 Congregational Chapel.

II GV

    1. Ashlar front elevation, brick sides, in front of 1700 meeting house. Pedimented, with acroteria and glazed circular window. Two storeys. Full length piers at quoins, with swag in frieze. Three composite pilasters. Four windows, round arches, moulded architrave with long narrow keystone, carved label below cills. Moulded band between pilasters. On ground floor, two windows, similar heads. Two central double doors of two panels in moulded architrave with carved keystone, fanlight above carved stone band. Two stone steps. Plinth. (For history of fabric see J Stephens, "Two Centuries Young" p 23-35) Two pillars in the Church Hall are reputed to be the masts of the "Mayflower". Two storey extension to the left has a rectangular bay window with three panels in the base above a carriage archway. Slate roof.
