Description
Ruskin Cottage is a 17th-century house located in North Hinksey Village. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and features a gabled thatch roof. The right end has a stone stack finished in brick, and there is a similar rear lateral stack made from 18th-century brick. The house has a two-unit plan, is one storey high with an attic, and has a two-window range. The front includes a 20th-century plank door with timber lintels, flanked by a 19th-century window on the left and a 20th-century three-light casement window. There are also similar 20th-century dormer casement windows. A 20th-century extension has been added to the rear. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is likely to be of interest. In 1874, John Ruskin mentioned this cottage while encouraging undergraduates to improve the road through the village, promoting the value of physical work, as noted on a plaque on the wall.
