Description
Birch Cottage is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 17th century. It is constructed from uncoursed limestone rubble and features a gabled and half-hipped thatch roof with a brick ridge stack. The building has a three-unit plan and is two storeys high, with a three-window range. The windows have chamfered timber lintels and include three-light leaded casements. There is a blocked gable-entry to the left, a rear entry, and another leaded casement.
At the rear right, there is a mid-18th century one-storey service wing made of limestone rubble, topped with a gabled stone slate roof and featuring a three-light leaded casement. Inside, the cottage has chamfered and stopped beams, and a chamfered bressumer over an open fireplace with inglenook seats. The central room has a four-bay queen-post roof with a chamfered cyma-stopped beam and purlin. The service wing, which was once used as a brewhouse, contains two collar trusses and a brick segmental-arched fireplace.
