Description
This is a house, dated 1690. It is located on the north side of Badswell Lane in Appleton with Eaton Badswell. The front is roughcast over uncoursed limestone rubble, with rendered strips. The roof is gabled and covered in old tiles, with symmetrical brick end stacks, rebuilt in the 20th century and with late 19th-century brickwork. The house follows a two-unit outshut plan and has two storeys and an attic, with a two-window front. A central 19th-century four-panelled door is set in a heavy, pegged frame and is sheltered by a pediment hood supported by octagonal oak posts. The hood’s front is decorated with pargetted plasterwork, displaying the date 1690 ("16 TS1 90") and grapevine motifs. The ground floor has early 19th-century horizontal-sliding sash windows. The first floor retains late 17th-century wood-mullioned cross windows, although these now have late 19th-century casement replacements. A gabled roof dormer includes a two-light leaded casement. The interior has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest. The building is a notable, early, nearly symmetrical example, particularly due to its rare pargetted porch.
