Description

This is a rectory, dating from the early 18th century, and subsequently altered in the mid-19th century. It is now a house. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, with a roughcast front. It has a gabled stone slate roof, with symmetrical end stacks of stone ashlar, each finished with three brick flues. The plan is L-shaped, with rear right wings. It is two storeys and an attic, with a symmetrical three-window front. The central doorway now has 20th-century French windows. There are mid-19th century sash windows. A moulded wood cornice runs along the top. Two hipped roof dormers are visible. A one-storey range extends along the rear left wall, constructed of chequer brick with a gabled stone slate roof and a brick end stack. The rear wall of this wing is of header bond grey brick with red brick vertical strips, dressings, and gauged brick flat arches over two late 18th-century six-pane sashes. A two-storey stair turret to the rear includes early 18th-century six-pane sashes with thick glazing bars and a reset early 18th-century segmental-pedimented doorcase. Two parallel rear wings are constructed of similar materials; one is of one storey and an attic with a six-light leaded casement, and the other is of two storeys with a three-window front featuring an eight-pane sash and four three-light leaded casements. The interior was not inspected, but it is likely to be of interest. A tall wall of coursed limestone rubble with flat brick coping encloses the front lawn, curving around the front to connect with a straight wall that runs back to the rear of the house.
