Description
This is a late 17th-century house, altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is located on the west side of Thorpe Street, Aston Upthorpe. The house is constructed of grey brick with red brick dressings and has an old plain-tile roof, with a brick central ridge stack. It originally had a two-unit through-passage plan.
The building is two storeys and an attic, with a three-window front. A 20th-century gabled porch with a sash door occupies the centre, flanked by 16-pane unhorned sash windows to the left and right. A moulded brick band runs between the ground and first floors. The first floor has a 12-pane sash window in the centre, and 16-pane unhorned sash windows to the left and right. A moulded red brick cornice runs along the eaves. There are two gabled dormers, each with a 2-light wood casement.
The left return has a wood casement window to the ground floor, a moulded brick band between the ground and first floors, and a blind rendered panel to the first floor centre. Another moulded brick band sits between the first floor and the attic gable, which features a 2-light 20th-century casement.
At the rear, there is an outshut with a cross-gabled projection in the centre. This projection contains a 2-light mullion and transom stair window with three transoms.
The interior includes a barrel-vaulted passage under a double flue from the central stack, chamfered spine beams to most rooms, a dog-leg staircase, and a single-storey wing to the right with a 20th-century wood cross window.
