Description
Nos 43 and 45 Gravel Hill are likely 16th century buildings situated prominently facing down Gravel Hill. They are timber framed, with the main eastern facade plastered and featuring a gable. The buildings have an old tile roof and a brick stack. They are two storeys high, with one sash window in the gable end and two sash windows below, accompanied by a central door. All the sash windows have glazing bars. The side, or northern facade, is made of red brick with exposed timber framing, featuring one window and a door beneath a small flat hood, with a gabled dormer above. These buildings were formerly known as the Basket Makers Arms Inn.
The raised pavement and wall are part of a group that includes Nos 5 to 19 (odd), the South Oxfordshire Technical College Old School and Main Buildings, Nos 43 to 49 (odd), and the wall and gate piers of the former Paradise House. Ancastle Cottage, along with Nos 2 to 36 (even) and the pavement surface in front of those properties, also forms a group with the entrance walls, piers, gates, and the lower lodge of Friar Park.
