Description
47 and 49 Gravel Hill are a pair of cottages built in 1890. They feature a painted brick facade that is panelled below the ground floor window, with string courses beneath the coved eaves. The cottages have a pyramidal tiled roof adorned with fishscale bands and a central chimney. They are two storeys tall, with one window each. The upper windows are set under elaborate pediments that extend through the eaves. There is a wrought iron balcony supported by large brackets, and the ground floor has sash windows while the upper floor has French casements. All windows are topped with segmental arches, and the doors are four-panel with fanlights.
The raised pavement and wall are part of a group that includes Nos 5 to 19 (odd), the South Oxfordshire Technical College Old School and Main Buildings, Nos 43 to 49 (odd), and the wall and gate piers of the former Paradise House. Ancastle Cottage, Nos 2 to 36 (even), and the pavement surface in front of these properties also contribute to this group, along with the entrance walls, piers, gates, and the lower lodge of Friar Park.
