Description
The Obelisk, located approximately 200 meters west of Shotover Park, is a Grade II* listed structure built around 1735 by William Kent for General James Tyrrell. It is made of limestone ashlar and features a square tapering shaft set on a pedestal with a moulded base and cornice. The base of the shaft is adorned with a band carved with a wave motif, and a spiked metal ball crowns the top. This obelisk is positioned on the main axis of the house and serves as a focal point within the significant early 18th-century formal layout of the garden. The design may reflect an adaptation of Kent's original proposal.
