Description

Thatchers is a house, now divided into two dwellings, originally dating back to the 16th century. It has undergone significant alterations and extensions, particularly in the early 19th century when it was remodelled to become six cottages. The building comprises two distinct ranges. The left range was originally timber-framed and is constructed of coursed flint rubble with brick dressings, with the right gable wall tile-hung. The right range features a cruck-framed structure; the rear retains original square timber framing, while the front was refaced in the 18th century using Flemish bond brick with flared headers. Both ranges are covered by a gabled roof of old tiles, with a stack located on the left ridge. The original layout is unclear. The two-storey left wing includes a 20th-century lean-to porch. The one-storey and attic, four-window range on the right has segmental arches over blocked doorways and incorporates 19th and 20th-century casement windows, as well as two gabled dormers. A two-bay extension, built in a similar style and using similar materials, was added to the right in the early 19th century. Later 19th-century casement windows are visible on the rear left, alongside 20th-century extensions that extend to the rear right. A one-storey wing, constructed of flint rubble with brick dressings and an old tile roof, juts out at a right angle from the front left. Internally, the left range features chamfered beams, a timber-framed partition wall, and a right-side wall. The right range showcases two raised crucks with collars and through-purlins, and a shortened stack positioned beside the passage to the left.
