Description
The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a Grade I listed building located in Checkendon. It features a nave, chancel, and apse dating from the 12th century, with a west tower and south porch added in the 15th century. The structure is built of coursed flint with stone dressing, and the chancel and apse have a plain tile roof, while the roof of the nave is not visible.
The church has a two-bay nave, a two-bay chancel, and an apse. The porch is positioned to the left of the center of the nave and has a two-centre archway, with Perpendicular style two-light windows on each side. The nave has a Romanesque doorway featuring a round arch supported by columns with decorated capitals, and a restored tympanum above a studded door. There is a Perpendicular three-light window to the left of the porch and a three-light panel tracery window to the right. The chancel has a Perpendicular two-light window to the left and a central door with a four-centred arch above it. The apse includes a Romanesque past window and a two-light window to the left.
Inside, the church features Romanesque nave and chancel arches supported by columns with richly carved capitals. The apse contains 13th-century wall paintings depicting a procession of apostles. The chancel floor has 15th-century brasses, and the nave has a 15th-century roof with carved bosses at the intersections of the ribs. There is a 16th-century font and a collection of funerary monuments in the chancel. Notable artwork includes a sculpture by Eric Kennington on the blocked north door of the nave and a window designed by Laurence Whistler.
