Description

The Four Horseshoes is a public house that dates from the late 15th century to early 16th century, with extensions added in the late 17th century and early 19th century. The building features three base crucks and is constructed of painted brick. It has a thatched roof with dormers, tiled roofs with dormers and tall brick chimney stacks, as well as a slated roof with tall brick chimney stacks. The layout is L-shaped with a cross passage along the long axis, and it has two storeys along with a single-storey extension at right angles.

The building has an irregular frontage facing the road, which includes a 17th-century ledged boarded door with strap hinges hung on pintles. There are some early 19th-century hornless sash windows, and the windows facing the forecourt are metal-framed. Inside, the lower parts of the crucks are incorporated into the bar area. The extensions along the long axis feature chamfered beams, some with stops, and wainscotting, and the ground floor has been altered to create one open space. The crucks are exposed in the first-floor passage and rooms. The early 19th-century extension at right angles has partly exposed roof braces visible in the interior. This building has been operating as a public house known as the Four Horseshoes since at least the 1840s.
