Description
John Hampden's Cottage is a house dating from the 18th century, with extensions from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is constructed from limestone rubble, with some timber framing and wattle and daub infill, topped by a thatched roof and a brick ridge stack. The building has a four-unit plan and is one storey plus attics. The front is irregular, featuring a slightly recessed central timber-framed section that includes a plank door to the right of centre next to a three-light casement window. There are also three-light 18th-century casements to the right and left, all set under concrete lintels, and three small two-light dormers. All windows have leaded lights, some of which are old. A stack is located to the left of centre. The left gable wall is timber framed and has a half-hipped roof. The rear of the cottage has first-floor framing to the right in older bays, which feature renewed casements. Inside, the right bays contain a central cruck frame, a clasped-purlin roof, and two staircases.
