Description
Clifton Hampden Church of England Primary School and the attached teacher's house were built around 1847 by Joseph Clarke for William Gibbs. The buildings are constructed from squared uncoursed stone and feature an old plain-tile roof with various stone stacks. Designed in the Gothic Revival style, the school consists of a single-storey, two-window range with a projecting central tower. The tower has double plank doors leading to a two-centred arched doorway at its base, flanked by 4-light stone mullion windows on either side. Above, there are three trefoil lancets in the upper stage of the tower, which also has a clock at its apex. The school has a gabled roof, while the tower features a cross-roof with a wooden bellcote topped by a spire and weathervane. The teacher's house at the rear has a complex plan and irregular fenestration, showcasing stone mullion and transom windows, along with a complex roof. There is a single late 19th-century bay addition to the left of the classrooms, designed in the same style. William Gibbs, who funded the construction, was the brother of G.H. Gibbs, Lord of the Manor, and contributed to the chapel at Keble College, Oxford.
