Description

Chiltern Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, which was remodelled in the early 18th century. Originally timber-framed, the front features rendered flint rubble with early 18th-century brick dressings. The left and right bays have later 18th-century random bond brick walling, and similar materials are used at the rear. The building has a gabled old tile roof with ridge stacks finished in 20th-century brick. It is designed in an L-plan and has two storeys with a four-window range. A 20th-century door is set beneath a timber lintel and is sheltered by a 20th-century brick porch. The windows display irregular fenestration with flat brick arches over 20th-century leaded casements, except for an 18th-century two-light casement with diamond panes located above an 18th-century three-light leaded casement to the right. At the rear, there is an 18th-century outshut. To the right of the front, there is a right-angled 18th-century wing that is one storey and has an attic, consisting of a one-bay range made of rendered flint rubble with brick dressings and a gabled old tile roof, along with a brick external stack and a three-light leaded casement to the left. Inside, original timber framing is exposed at the rear, with stop-chamfered beams and chamfered bressumers over the fireplaces. The roof structure features a four-bay queen-post design with clasped purlins.
