Description

Rectory Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th or early 17th century, with a refronting or re-windowing in the early 18th century. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone rubble with chamfered timber lintels, and has an old plain-tile roof with brick gable stacks. The house follows a central-stair plan and has two storeys plus attics. The front has a 3-window facade; the central doorway has a 3-light casement to the left and a 2-light casement to the right, both with transoms. The first floor has casements of 3, 2, and 3 lights, and there are two 3-light dormers. All window frames have been renewed. Stone mullioned cellar windows are also present. The gable stacks have two diagonal shafts. A small, single-storey wing with a hipped roof adjoins the left side. The right gable wall has small, single-light windows with heavy frames and leaded lights. A 19th-century two-storey brick extension forms the rear of the building.

Internally, the house has heavy timber-framed cross partitions and chamfered beams with ogee stops. There are three 16th-century moulded stone fireplaces with herringbone tiling, as well as a large open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer. An early 18th-century bolection-mould panelled room, with a matching fireplace, door, and doorcase (now relocated within the house), is also present. There are moulded plank doors in chamfered and stopped frames. The cellar features heavy flat joists; the roof is of a 3-bay butt-purlin design.
