Description
The Reade Memorial is a stone memorial built in 1827 to commemorate John Thurlow Reade, who died while serving in India, likely in Sehaarunpore, now known as Saharunpur. The memorial has a square plan with a stepped plinth and a box shape that forms the main body, topped with a steep pyramid that has an indented course near the apex. One face of the box is inscribed with the following text:
JOHN THURLOW READE
ESQUIRE
SEHAARUNPORE
NOVEMBER 25TH A.D. 1827
ALAS MY BROTHER
This memorial is of special interest as an early 19th-century stone tribute to a British individual who died in India. Additionally, it is noteworthy that Reade's family later designed the Grade II listed Maharaja Well at Stoke Row, Oxfordshire, in the 19th century.
