Description

The Old Stores is a late 17th-century house, extended in the 18th century. It is built of colourwashed limestone rubble with timber lintels, featuring a plain-tile roof and brick stacks. The building is arranged in an L-shape. The two-storey, two-window front range, likely dating to the 18th century, has four-pane sash windows at the first floor, with brick quoins. A former shop front is at ground floor level, with an entrance between two canted bay windows. A central brick stack is present. A lower rear wing has a gabled dormer and a gable stack. A gabled stair projection sits within the angle between the two ranges. Inside the rear wing is a large open fireplace with a chamfered spine beam fitted with run-out stops, and a late 17th-century dogleg staircase with heavy turned balusters. The front range has a clasped-purlin roof with queen-post trusses. The building served as the village shop for many years.
