Description
Wrought-iron gates and screen, dating from the early 18th century, are located approximately 150 meters south of Shotover Park. The gates and screen are made of wrought iron set on a limestone ashlar dwarf wall and are designed in a Baroque style. The plain railings flank double gates, which feature elaborate scrollwork on the side pilasters and an overthrow that incorporates shields and informal foliage. The details of the pilasters and the gates, including their scrollwork lock rails and arrow dogbars, closely resemble those of the Ditchley Gate at Blenheim Palace. These gates are positioned on one of the cross axes of the significant early 18th-century layout of the formal garden created for General James Tyrrell.
