Description

Chantry House, dating from around 1400, is a timber-framed building located on Church Avenue. It is rectangular in shape, with three storeys on the east side and two storeys on the west. The substantial wall framing features plaster infilling, while the western ground floor includes brick infilling and a moulded bressumer above. The building has four casement windows with modern leaded glazing. There is a reproduction door that leads to the original Tudor doorway, complete with spandrels. The eastern side has similar windows but also features three early small four-light windows with early leaded glazing on the top floor. A projecting two-storey gabled wing and a later ground floor gabled porch are also present. Inside, the building showcases exposed timbering, with the roof structure visible on the upper floor. Chantry House is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 7 Chantry House, Chantry Cottage (No 20 Thameside), Nos 8 to 20, the Brewery Buildings at No 86A New Street, and St Mary's Parish Church on Hart Street.
