Description

The Old College is a building that originally served as a college and is now used as a shop and workshops. It dates from the late 18th century and was extended in 1878 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The structure is made of brick with flared headers and red dressings, along with coursed clunch rubble featuring limestone dressings. It has old plain-tile roofs with brick stacks and an irregular courtyard plan.

The building has two storeys plus attics and one storey plus attics. The main front range, which has seven windows, features a stepped plinth and a storey band. The ground floor is constructed in Flemish bond, while the upper floor is in header bond. The third bay from the right projects slightly and includes a brick pediment with an arched doorway that has been inserted into a blocked carriage entry. The ground-floor windows are fitted with 20th-century bow windows, which are linked in pairs over secondary shop doorways. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows set under segmental arches.

The roof includes three hipped dormers on the left and one on the right of the pediment. There is a lower six-window range that returns to the right, made of stone with brick above the lower storey. Two doorways feature shouldered lintels, and some windows have stone mullions and transoms, although three windows have been altered. Five of the six hipped dormers have been deepened. The roof also has two large stacks with arched panels, one of which is corbelled out from the facade.

Further 19th-century ranges surround the courtyard and have similar dormers. The courtyard features some glazed pointed-segmental cloister arches made of brick. The interior has not been inspected. The building was formerly a Missionary College.
