Description
The Birdcage Public House is a public house dating from the early 16th century, with a likely 16th-century three-storey addition on the left and a late 18th-century lean-to addition at the ground floor. The building features a rendered exterior, probably over brick at the ground floor, and has a slate roof on the lean-to section between the ground and first floors. The structure includes large timber framing with rendered infill and old plain-tile roofs, along with brick stacks.
The façade presents a two-storey, two-window range, with a three-storey single-window range to the left. There are sash doors at the center and an angled corner to the left. The left and right sides feature tripartite unhorned sashes with glazing bars, while a horizontal sliding sash is located to the right. A two-light leaded casement is positioned at the center. The timber framing on the first floor to the left showcases unusual crossed tension braces. A 20th-century two-light wood mullion and transom window is also present on the first floor to the left. The second floor jetties out to the left and contains a two-light casement. The roof has gables of varying heights at the center and right, with a gabled roof to the left that has a gable end facing the street.
On the left return, there are 16th-century wood angled oriels on the first floor, featuring Perpendicular tracery. Inside, the ground floor displays visible spine beams, dragon beams, and joists. The building is reputed to have cellars that date back to before the 16th century.
