Description

Manor House is an early to mid 18th century manor house that was extended in the late 19th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and features stone-slate roofs with stone and brick stacks. The building has a double-depth plan and stands two storeys high, plus attics and a basement. The original front has three windows and a projecting full-height porch wing on the right. The windows are sashes set in plain stone architraves with keyblocks, and there is a gabled roof dormer on the left. The left return wall also has similar sashes in a double-gabled design. The garden front, made of ashlar, has three windows and a storey band, with blind windows at the basement level. To the right of the front, there is a large late 19th-century range with irregular stone-mullioned windows and an arched mullioned and transomed window at the front. Inside, there is a fine early to mid 18th-century open-well staircase with ramped and wreathed handrails, an open string with scrolled spandrel brackets, and three turned balusters per tread. The interior also features a fireplace with an eared architrave and a heavily-carved cornice, along with a butt-purlin roof. This house was formerly the home of John Buchan, Baron Tweedsmuir, who served as Governor-General of Canada.
