Description
Postmasters Hall, located at 5 Merton Street, is a building from the 16th to 17th century with modern additions on the north side. It is two stories tall, constructed of plastered rubble, and features two gabled attic dormers beneath a Welsh slate roof. The first floor has a renewed and slightly moulded string course. On the ground floor, there are two three-light stone caveto-moulded mullioned windows, mostly renewed, along with a single light window of the same style. The first floor contains two three-light stone caveto-moulded windows that may be original, as well as a single light window of the same design. The dormers are fitted with three-light wooden casement windows. The east gable end features original stone moulded mullioned windows with two and three lights, and there are modern stone-faced chimney stacks. The front doorway has a plain stone frame and a modern bracketed wooden hood in the style of the 18th century; the door itself is likely from the 17th century.
Inside, the building includes original panelling, a fireplace, an overmantel, and a collar beam roof. Historically, this site is notable as the birthplace and residence of Anthony Wood, an antiquary and historian. The exterior was drawn by J.C. Buckler in 1821. Postmasters Hall, along with Beam Hall and Nos 3, 4A, and 5, forms a group with New Block, Corpus Christi College, and Oriel College.
