Description
The tennis court, located on Kybald Street, dates back to 1485 and is noted on a map from 1675, although it was likely rebuilt around 1798. Tennis has a long history in Oxford, first mentioned there in 1508, and this court is the only one still in use in the city. Constructed from stone with a roof, the court underwent alterations around 1970. The exterior features a flat chamfered stone arched doorway, while the interior includes a passage for spectators with an open arcaded side made of simple woodwork and small classical columns, which likely date from the 1798 rebuild. The tennis court is owned by Merton College and is rented to the Tennis Club. All the listed buildings on Kybald Street form a group.
