Description

University College, built between 1659 and 1666, features the South Range, which includes the Chapel, Hall, and Kitchen. The Chapel is located to the east, while the Hall is to the west, with a gabled frontispiece situated between them. The North elevation was remodeled in 1802 under the design of James Griffith, the Master at that time. The Chapel was consecrated in 1666, and its east end was rebuilt and the roof raised by Sir Gilbert Scott in 1862. Notable features include stained glass by Abraham van Linge from 1641, woodwork by Thomas Richardson and Arthur Frogley from 1665, and a screen by Robert Barker from 1694, which was reset in 1924. The Hall was completed in 1657, with its interior remodeled in 1766 by Henry Keene and repaired in 1892. An extension to the west was added in 1904 using Guiting ashlar, and the plaster ceiling was removed. The Hall also contains armorial glass by Willement from 1833. The Kitchen, located to the south of the Hall, was built between 1688 and 1690. The Hall's gable was altered in 1958-1959.
