Description
The Manchester Tennis and Racquet Club is a tennis and racquet club built around 1880 by George T Redmayne, with later alterations. The building is constructed of brick with terracotta dressings and features a slate and part-glazed roof. Its layout is irregularly grouped in a T-plan, with the main court buildings arranged parallel to the street and set back from it. A central wing projects towards the street, housing the entrance, while flanking buildings fill in the angles on each side.
The exterior includes an entrance block that rises three storeys, featuring a moulded round-arched doorway within a flat-roofed porch to the right, accompanied by a round-headed window. Above, there is an arcaded range of three round-headed windows with a continuous hoodmould on the first floor, and a blind round-arched window in a raised upper storey. A fluted chimney stack is positioned to the right. To the right of the entrance, there is a shallow gabled range with an arcade of four bays on the ground floor, showcasing three round-arched windows. Paired windows are set beneath a wide relieving arch, with terracotta panelling in the spandrel beneath the gable above. To the left of the entrance, a flat-roofed single-storey block also features round-arched windows and a high parapet.
The interior of the club is largely unaltered, retaining original surfaces in the racquets court and a complete real tennis court, along with other principal reception rooms and a staircase. Historically, the club was founded in 1878 and moved to its current site around 1880. Initially, it included a real tennis court, a racquets court, and a bowling alley, with a squash court added on an upper floor in 1925.
