Description
The Church of the Sacred Trinity is a church that now also serves as a library and offices. It was built in 1752, with a tower dating back to 1635. The church underwent restoration between 1871 and 1874 by architect Holden. The exterior is constructed of ashlar stone and features a two-stage tower in a transitional Gothic-classical style. The lower stage has a Decorated window divided by a transom, and there are paired bell chamber lights above. The tower is adorned with angle pilasters and a triglyph frieze beneath an embattled parapet with cusped finials. A leaded spirelet topped with a wrought-iron weather vane completes the tower.
The nave is designed as two storeys to accommodate a galleried interior. It has round-arched doorways on the northwest and southwest sides, featuring heavy voussoirs, as well as round-arched windows with kneelers and keystones on each floor, separated by a plain string course. A modillion eaves cornice is located below the parapet. The chancel projects as a small rectangular bay and includes a pair of round-headed windows with a round-headed niche above, along with a string course.
Inside, the church has a galleried plan, with aisles below the gallery that have been partitioned off to create separate offices. The galleries themselves are now used as a library. The interior features moulded wood panelling on the gallery and around the casing of the supporting piers, with Doric columns above. The shallow king-post and panelled roof is a result of the Victorian restoration.
