Description

The Old Marston War Memorial is a limestone structure erected in a prominent position to the left of the path leading to St Nicholas’s Church. It dates from the First World War, commemorating those who died between 1914 and 1918. The memorial consists of a corniced stone cross with a quatrefoil motif on its south-facing side. The tapering shaft is octagonal, featuring carved broach stops at its base. It stands on an octagonal plinth, itself set on a square, chamfered stone also with carved broach stops, and finally on a two-stepped square base. The total height of the memorial is approximately 2.75 metres. Inscribed on three faces of the octagonal base are the words "1914 / LEST / WE / FORGET / 1918" in capital letters. A further inscription on the riser of the top step reads: "THEIR NAMES ARE RECORDED WITHIN THE CHURCH”.
