Description

No. 83 on High Street is a late 18th-century house with a modern shop front. It has a four-storey stuccoed façade with cellars and a rusticated ground floor shop. The building features a moulded cornice and two composite pilasters, which are topped with carved heads of Bacchus. Above the cornice, the third floor includes two blind sash windows. The entrance has a four-panel door with a rectangular light above it. The first floor is distinguished by an iron balcony and a three-light late 18th-century Venetian window. There is a stone band at the second floor, which contains two sash windows in plain reveals.

Historically, a tenement at this location was known as the Angel in 1552, and by 1778, it had been the principal inn for over a century. In 1835, Queen Adelaide held a drawing room here. No. 83 served as the coffee room, while the rest of the inn extended eastward onto the site of the Examination Schools. Notably, in 1828, No. 84 was also part of the inn. Some repairs were made around 1765. The inn ceased operations in 1866. All the listed buildings on the south side of High Street form a group.
