Description

Nos. 42 and 43 on High Street is a house and shops that date back to the 16th and 17th centuries, with alterations made in the early 18th century and possibly later. The building is three stories tall, featuring stuccoed timber framing set on a brick and stone base, with cellars, a two-gabled attic floor, a Welsh slate roof, and brick stacks. The second and third floors project slightly and are separated by a moulded and dentilled cornice. Each gable has moulded and enriched bargeboards, with a small sash window in each. Each floor also features a bay window with double 18th-century sashes in moulded frames.

Inside the central passageway, there are two C16-17 moulded wood doorframes with four-centred heads, stop chamfers, and moulded spandrels. The outer frame has a carved rose, while the inner frame features a blank shield. Additionally, there are two moulded ceiling beams in the passageway. The building has a modern shopfront and a central doorway leading to the passage. Historically, it was known as Chapel Hall, and records of leases and tenants from 1598 to 1849 are documented in historical society publications. All the listed buildings on the north side of High Street form a group.
