Description
The Church of St Michael is a parish church located on Cornmarket Street and Ship Street. The west tower, constructed from Coral Rag, dates from the early to mid-12th century and was restored in the 19th century by S G Bruton, with further repairs in 1896 by architect C B Hutchinson. The walls were partly rebuilt in 1908 by A Mardon Mowbray. The chancel, which dates from the 13th century, had a south chapel added around 1280 and was extended to the west in the 14th century, with heightening occurring in 1854. An early 14th-century north chapel and transept were partly rebuilt in 1833 by architect John Plowman. The late 15th-century north and south arcades and the north aisle are notable features, along with the rebuilt tower arch and south porch. The church underwent restoration in 1854 by G E Street, which included the rebuilding of the chancel. Inside, there are fittings that include late 13th-century and 16th-century stained glass. A new vestry was added in 1971. The Church of St Michael, along with Nos 1 to 6 (consecutive) and 8 to 16 (consecutive) Ship Street, forms a group.
