Description

Magdalen College features a range on the High Street that dates back to 1485. This building includes elements from the early 16th century and incorporates parts of St John's Hospital, along with remains of a 14th-century chapel. It was partly reconstructed between 1665 and 1666. At the eastern end, there is a bell tower built between 1492 and 1500, with short ranges to the east and west that were completed by 1509. An early 17th-century wing extends to the north at the eastern end, which now forms the east side of the Chaplain's Quadrangle. The building was partly refaced in synthetic stone in 1955, and the gatehouse was altered in 1957.
