Description

All Souls College, established in 1485, features a front or south quadrangle that includes the chapel and the south-east range on the High Street. The east, south, and west sides of the quadrangle date back to around 1440, with the chapel completed in 1442. These sections are constructed from Headington stone with Taynton stone dressings, with masons Richard Chevynton and Robert Jannys credited for their work. The south-east range was built in 1553 by John Warner, who served as Warden from 1536 to 1555, and was completed by Robert Hovenden, Warden from 1571 to 1614. This range was refaced in 1827, and its interior features 16th and 17th century overmantels and 17th century panelling. The High Street front of the south quadrangle was also refaced in 1827, with the figures of the founder and co-founder and the carving over the south gatehouse renewed in 1940. Additionally, the west elevation on Catte Street was refaced in Bath stone around 1850.
