Description
The Radcliffe Camera, located in Radcliffe Square, was built between 1737 and 1749 through the generosity of Dr. John Radcliffe, designed by James Gibbs with master-masons William Townesend and William Smith from Warwick. The lower storeys are constructed from Headington freestone, while the upper part is made of Taynton stone. In 1863, the arches on the ground floor were glazed, and a new north entrance with steps was added. Repairs were carried out in 1913 under the guidance of Sir T. G. Jackson, and the facing has been patched with Clipsham stone. The Radcliffe Camera is part of a group of buildings in Radcliffe Square that hold significant importance as the center of the University of Oxford. For further historical context, see "Bibliotheca Radclivinana" (1747) and the "Exhibition Catalogue" (1949).
