Description

The Codrington Library at All Souls College was begun in 1716, with Dr. Clarke and Sir Nathaniel Lloyd serving as inspectors. The building was supervised by Hawksmoor, with masons Townesend and Peisley involved in the construction. Alterations and additions were made in 1838 and 1866. A sundial from 1659, originally located on the south side of the chapel, has been reset on the south elevation of the library. In 1949, a store was rebuilt on the northeast side. The interior features plasterwork by Roberts, fittings by carpenter Richard Tawney, and busts by Sir Henry Cheere.
