Description

The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a parish church located at the east end of the High Street, partially obscured by surrounding buildings. It dates from the 14th to the 20th century, with most of its structure being medieval. The west tower, faced with ashlar stone, was built in the mid-16th century, and the south aisle was added in the early 19th century. Restoration work in the early 19th century included the addition of battlements and pinnacles to the tower. North vestries were added in 1905. The windows date from the 14th to the 16th century in design, with some original stonework remaining. The south doorway and porch date back to around 1355. The church features impressive proportions, including a late 15th-century tie-beam nave roof adorned with carved bosses and figures. There are wall monuments from the 18th and 19th centuries, including carved tablets with cherubim from 1702, 1705, and 1719, a carved cartouche from 1726, and a finely carved Revis monument from 1755. The church is part of a group with Nos 7 to 27 (odd) High Street.
